Because of the continued danger of apostasy, Paul writes a second letter to Timothy to charge him to remain true to the doctrines of grace. He spells out that sound doctrine was going to fall out of favor, and therefore it must be preached “in season and out of season.” In the epistle to Titus, Paul gives this man much the same message as he does to Timothy, tailoring it to the needs of the church at Crete. The emphasis in Titus is upon good works, not as a way to be saved, but as a normal and desired outflow of the faith. Both 2 Timothy and Titus are timely books for modern times!
